Quick, easy and very tasty. I followed recipe to the letter and would certainly make again. Used to glaze pork ribs. Very happy, thanks for sharing!-04 Jul 2017

I really like this recipe, it is really quick, and I have made it several times. I add stuff though, some of the things I might throw in are: a 1/2 bottle or so of purchased honey barbeque sauce, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, a little brown sugar, and a dash of chili powder. It always comes out good.-04 Sep 2002

How to Make BBQ Sauce

  1. Combine Ingredients: Combine all of the ingredients in a sauce pan.
  2. Bring to a boil: After being over medium heat for a few minutes, large bubbles will start to appear.
  3. Reduce to a simmer: You should turn the heat down after it boils and allow it to simmer, seeing only intermittent bubbles.
  4. Simmer for 15 minutes: This allows the sauce to thicken and the flavors to develop.

Storage and leftovers

How long does homemade barbecue sauce last?

We don&rsquot typically keep it longer than a week unless it&rsquos frozen. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. A mason jar or old spaghetti jar works great.

Can you freeze homemade BBQ sauce?

Yes, to freeze the sauce, allow it to cool completely then store in a freezer safe container. I like to freeze ours in an ice cube tray and then pop the frozen BBQ sauce cubes into a gallon bag so it&rsquos easy to thaw as much or little as you need.

The sauce can also be stored in mason jars or old spaghetti jars. Make sure to leave head space for expansion. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Store in an air tight container.

What is chipotle BBQ sauce?

As the name suggests, the key ingredient in the sauce is the chipotle pepper. These are often made from ripened jalapeño chiles that have been smoked and dried. This gives them an unmistakable flavor that is completely different to the chiles used in most traditional BBQ sauces, such as the habanero.

Chipotle sauce can come in a few forms, with its most common form being similar to mayonnaise. However, chipotle BBQ sauce contains more ketchup and chopped tomatoes to make it more similar to traditional barbecue sauce.

Simple BBQ Chicken Sauce

This easy BBQ sauce imparts moisture and flavor to grilled chicken, and it can be used on beef, pork, and even tofu or tempeh. With the perfect combination of tang and sweetness, the sauce isn't overpowering and won't drown the charred and smoky profile of your grilled meats. Made with simple ingredients, our recipe doesn't have high levels of sugar or sodium like store-bought sauces do. Experiment with the seasoning to find your favorite balance, more cayenne and chili powder for a spicier version, or more sugar and paprika for a sweeter and stickier sauce.

Make the sauce on the day of your cookout in less than 15 minutes, or save some time and prepare ahead the sauce will keep in the fridge for up to a week.

Our recipe uses simple seasonings and spices. If you want to go one step beyond, make the ketchup at home to ensure that all ingredients are natural and no additives or preservatives are in it. By doing so, you can also be sure the BBQ sauce free of soy and gluten, as most regular kinds of ketchup do contain wheat or soy.

Possible Recipe Variations:

Want to customize your own BBQ sauce recipe a bit? Feel free to:

  • Make it gluten-free: To make gluten-free BBQ sauce, just be sure to use gluten-free liquid smoke. (I recommend Wright’s or Colgin.)
  • Make it vegan: To make vegan BBQ sauce, just be sure to use vegan Worcestershire. (I recommend Annie’s.)
  • Make it sweeter: Add more honey, to taste.
  • Make it smokier: Add a touch more liquid smoke, to taste.
  • Make it thicker: Simmer the sauce for longer until it reduces to your desired consistency.
