Making this pizza sauce from scratch is so easy because you start with a can of tomato sauce! Add in fresh pizza herbs and simmer for a few minutes. Next thing you know, you've got a delicious homemade pizza sauce that is not only super quick and easy to make but tastes better than store-bought!
What's funny is, I used to make a version of this sauce all the time as a kid! (Yes as a kid!) I was making yeast-risen pizza dough from scratch and homemade pizza sauce in my youth. Looking back. how hilarious is that?! Back then though, I would just crack open the can of tomato sauce and stir in garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasoning. I would taste along the way and stop adding seasoning when my advanced palate thought it tasted just right! [laughs out loud]
Turns out the ingredients aren't much different in my grown-up version! I've swapped fresh herbs, garlic, and shallot for the dried herbs and spices. (Still, in a pinch, you could use dried seasonings!) Another big difference is I cook the sauce to thicken it up and enhance the flavor!

Sure, you can buy pizza sauce at the store. But making it is so much better. Here&rsquos why:
- It&rsquos cheaper. This recipe makes enough sauce for 3-4 full size pizzas (freeze or can the rest of it!) and costs only about $3 to make the whole thing!
- It&rsquos usually healthier. You control the ingredients going in, and many store-bought sauces have lots of added sugar.

- 1 cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves, OR 1 1/2 Tbsp dried basil
- 1 tsp salt

- In a blender (I use this one), combine tomatoes, basil, salt and pepper. Blend on low for 15-30 seconds, or until ingredients are blended well.

How To Make Authentic Italian Pizza Sauce
Italian pizza sauce is very simple. It does not need to be made with many different ingredients as you are only going to need the most basic ones if you really want to make it authentic.
Granted, you can add some ingredients that you want to taste in the sauce, just keep it simple.
No matter what ingredients you put in the sauce, always make sure you use the freshest ones.
Shop For The Ingredients
If you want the pizza sauce to be as authentic as possible, you are only going to need to shop for fresh tomatoes. The other ingredients such as the salt and oil should be at home.
If you want to make your pizza sauce a bit classy or you want to add more flavors, then you can add maybe a few oregano and basil leaves to it , but do not let them overpower the other ingredients.
Olive oil is the most common oil to be used in a pizza sauce. As for the salt, I find it that the pizza sauce will taste better if you use sea salt as it brings just the right saltiness to the sauce.
If you have bought whole, unpeeled tomatoes, then you should get them out of the can and start peeling off the thin skin. Then, c rush the tomatoes using your hands or slice them with a knife.
You can also mash them with a fork or even use a food processor to get a more even consistency. The tomatoes should not be too watery but also not too chunky.
Put the crushed tomatoes in a bowl and then add the other ingredients. Mix it well with a spoon and then add more salt if needed and there it is, the best pizza sauce for your next pizza.
Do Not Cook The Sauce!
Yes, it is convenient to not cook the sauce but it is also for the better. It not only makes the process faster but it will also actually make the sauce taste better when you use it.
Keeping the sauce unhooked will give you that zesty, tangy, and fresh taste . These flavors will be preserved if you directly put it in the fridge instead of cooking the sauce first.
Even after baking, the taste will still be noticeable. That is because the fresh ingredients stayed fresh even after you have processed them, making the pizza sauce taste better later on.

This easy homemade pizza sauce is quick to make with a few pantry staples!
- 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/4 of a large yellow onion, diced (about 1/4 cup )
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 can (15.5 ounces) plain tomato sauce
- kosher salt to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon honey or sugar (optional), to cut the acidity of the tomatoes if needed
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Add garlic and onion and sauté, stirring frequently, until onions are translucent, about 3 minutes.
- Add pepper, oregano, basil, and a pinch of salt to saucepan and stir to combine.
- Add tomato sauce to pan and stir to combine. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring frequently, for 8-10 minutes or until sauce is thickened. Taste sauce and add salt and honey or sugar to taste.
- Use immediately or let sauce cool completely and transfer to an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.
Cook your sauce until it’s quite thick for best results. We want to cook off as much excess water as possible so the sauce doesn’t make our pizza crust soggy! Good pizza sauce should be thick – almost like the consistency of tomato paste.
Taste your sauce and adjust as you go! Tomatoes can vary in acidity and sweetness. When the sauce is almost done, give it a taste. If the flavors don’t quite “pop” yet, add a pinch of salt. If the sauce is too acidic, add 1/2 teaspoon of honey or sugar to cut the acidity.
How much sauce should I use? We recommend using between 1/2 cup and 1 cup of sauce per pizza, depending on the size. Spoon sauce onto your pizza dough a bit at a time and spread it gently over the dough until you have a thin layer of sauce across the whole surface, leaving about 1/2 inch of space around the edges for the crust.
Additions and Substitutions. For a spicier sauce, add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes. Use 1/2 teaspoon onion powder and 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder in place of the fresh onion and garlic if you like, or omit them altogether if you have an allium sensitivity. If you omit the onion and garlic, you may want to add extra herbs to round out the sauce. Use any variety of canned tomatoes you like here: we typically grab tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, or diced tomatoes. Replace the canned tomatoes with fresh tomatoes if you like! We recommend using about 1 pound of tomatoes for each 15.5 ounce can of tomato sauce, and steaming and peeling your fresh tomatoes before adding them to the sauce OR running the final sauce through a food mill to remove any peels.
If you’d like a smoother sauce, let the pizza sauce cool and then blend it in a blender or food processor until smooth. We don’t typically blend our sauce the onion and garlic cook down quite a bit so you don’t notice too much texture here.
How to store pizza sauce. Let sauce cool completely, then store in an airtight container in the fridge (up to 5 days) or freezer (up to 4 months without losing flavor).

Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe Ingredients
My easy homemade pizza sauce recipe calls for 5 basic ingredients, most (or all) of which you likely have in your pantry! Here’s what you’ll need to make it:
- Canned whole peeled tomatoes. Because this recipe is so simple, I recommend seeking out good quality canned tomatoes. If you can find them, choose San Marzano tomatoes, which are especially sweet with a touch of mild acidity.
- Extra-virgin olive oil. A few teaspoons give the sauce a little richness, so it’s not too watery.
- And garlic, sea salt, and olive oil. They round out this sauce, giving it a full, robust flavor.
How to Make Pizza Sauce
This pizza sauce recipe is quick and easy to make. Once you’ve assembled your ingredients, all you need to do is plop them in a food processor and blend until smooth!
Rather than cooking this sauce on the stove, I dollop it straight on to the pizza from there. It’s thick enough that it doesn’t need to simmer down on the stove. Baking it in the oven cooks it just the right amount, and it keeps a delightful, fresh tomato flavor.
Once you’ve spread the sauce on your pizza, top it however you’d like! I’m a fan of pairing it with fresh basil leaves, tomatoes, mozzarella, and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes to make a Margherita pizza, but feel free to play with different toppings. Homemade pizza is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. I&rsquom a pizza/pasta/taco fan. It is my &ldquocomfort&rdquo food, and the favorites from my childhood, and what ends up on my family table more nights than not.

How many pizzas does this pizza sauce recipe make?
For this, I used a big 28 ounce can of crushed San Marzanos. It makes enough sauce for 2 &ndash 3 large pizzas, depending on how crazy you go with the sauce.
I go crazy, and like extra to dip my crust in, so definitely two pizzas for me. If you are more conservative with your sauce love, you could probably squeeze 3 out of this. Personally, I love making a double batch and freezing the extra!
This would also be a really great option for dipping my garlic twisty breadsticks into!

- 3 tbsp tomato purée
- 1 bay leaf

Heat the oil in a saucepan over a low heat, then add the onion along with a generous pinch of salt. Fry gently for 12-15 mins or until the onion has softened and is turning translucent. Add the garlic and fry for a further min. Tip in the tomatoes and purée along with the bay, oregano and sugar. Bring to the boil and lower the heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 30-35 mins or until thickened and reduced. Season. For a really smooth sauce, blitz with a stick blender, otherwise leave as is.
Stir the basil into the sauce. The sauce will cover 4-6 large pizza bases. Keeps well in the fridge for 1 week or stored in a container in the freezer.
Quick and Easy 10 minute Pizza Sauce Recipe
Pizza is something that all of my family will eat, and there will never be a complaint. So, on days that I struggle with a plan for dinner, (and I know I’m not the only one) I need a quick pizza sauce recipe that I know everyone in my family will love. I always have the ingredients on hand for just a basic cheese pizza, and I personally enjoy making my sauce from scratch. I love that I can control the ingredients and make the sauce just the way I like it.
Pizza is seriously the easiest thing to make from almost scratch. Almost scratch is where you take a shortcut to help you out on the time you have to put into making dinner. One thing I buy is pizza dough. I usually get it from Trader Joe’s, but this time I got some frozen from HEB (which is our Texas grocery store). If I have the time, and really want to get my kids involved, I have a homemade pizza dough recipe.
Making the pizza sauce is something that is very quick and easy, which is great for those who are on special diets or have special dietary needs. It takes me all of 10 minutes to make the sauce from scratch. Now, that doesn’t mean I don’t pick up some pizza sauce while I’m at Trader Joe’s, because sometimes I do. And if you pick up the pre-made sauce, it only makes the whole pizza making process even easier.
Here’s what you need to make my Quick and Easy 10-minute Pizza Sauce:
