According to Madison.com, the Madison Children’s Museum in Madison, Wisconsin, has applied for a liquor license from the city. While the museum is primarily dedicated to serving children and families during the day, it hosts after-hours events for adults and also rents out its space for events like weddings, fundraisers, and birthday parties. The problem is that the museum’s in-house catering company, The Roman Candle, does not have a liquor license for the museum, and thus the institution cannot compete for event business with other local venues that do have liquor licenses, like the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and the Central Library in Madison. The museum says that if it receives a liquor license, it would not serve alcohol during museum hours, but only at events from 5 p.m. to midnight, when children would not be present. The museum asserts that being able to obtain a liquor license for after-hours events would allow it to make more money from private events, which would directly help the museum with funding its primary goal of being a good museum for children and families during the day.

Canela, which means cinnamon in Spanish, opened in May 2016 and has been fine-tuning its culinary direction since then. The owners plan to extend the hours this summer to draw evening visitors.

SCENE & DECOR: On our visit, several students were quietly glued to their laptops, and diners in business attire were indulging in the lunch menu. The cool-jazz music wafting through the room added a calming element. The decor is made up of a mishmash of items, with shelves of bread and glass canisters of various grains stashed near the kitchen. Coach lamps, green plants and a nighttime photo of the Inner Harbor add to the setting.

APPETIZERS There is a traditional Middle Eastern hummus on the menu, but we recommend the mashawsha dip ($9.95), Catalan's contribution. The great house-made blend is individualized with fava beans, slices of hard-boiled eggs and a drizzle of olive oil. The large, shareable bowl is served warm with pita bread, pickled vegetables and olives.

ENTREES The zaatar sandwich ($7.25) is a popular item that many people were ordering while we were there. We can understand why — it's fabulous. Crusty ciabatta bread is filled with spicy, pan-fried eggplant, roasted red peppers, red onions, cucumbers, sliced hard-boiled eggs and creamy goat cheese. The Catalan kebab sandwich ($8.25) was also delicious. House-made ground sirloin and lamb patties are grilled and tucked into a toasted baguette, slathered with tahini sauce, and topped with spicy onions and pickles.
