Enduro: A Spacious Respite From the Midtown Hustle


Enduro opened this fall in a Midtown space set back from Third Avenue that used to be occupied by an Outback Steakhouse, but walking into the restaurant will leave you stunned that restaurants this size are still opening in Manhattan. It’s a stunning space to look at, and the "modern American grill," the brainchild of culinary veterans, is also serving some delicious food.

Enduro is owned by Alan Rosen, who also runs Brooklyn’s famed Junior’s, and he’s brought on chef Nathan Huntington, who was formerly chef de cuisine at Chicago’s renowned L2O, where he helped Laurent Gras win three Michelin stars. They’ve assembled a reasonably priced menu of high-quality ingredients prepared simply and smartly, while staying fun and inventive. We had the opportunity to dine there at the invitation of the restaurant, and left quite impressed by the experience.

You’ll most likely want to order a few "Snacks" for the table when you sit down, so go for the fresh-baked pretzel bread, daily pickled vegetables, and house-smoked whitefish spread, which is smoky and would go great on a bagel, a nod to Rosen’s Junior’s pedigree. Shrimp in the shrimp cocktail were monstrous and would be at home in a fine steakhouse, a diver scallop with butternut squash and watercress was perfectly cooked, as was a crabcake that contained a lot more crab than cake. For entrées, there’s plenty for carnivores: a 22-hour braised hunk of short rib could have been eaten with a spoon, all meats are hormone- and antibiotic-free, steaks are dry-aged for 28 days, and the house-ground burger is sourced from Niman Ranch, as well as the bacon. There are also all-natural chickens spinning in the rotisserie, along with Berkshire pork loin and a whole fish of the day. Also made in-house are a coconut layer cake and a soft-serve cheesecake and graham cracker ice cream that all guests should be required to order.

Enduro is a restaurant that can fit into lots of niches: Order creamed spinach, shrimp cocktail, a rib-eye for two, and thick-cut bacon and you’ve got a steakhouse. Order the charcuterie platter and a handful of snacks and appetizers in the bar room and it’s a small plate wine bar. Order the rotisserie chicken and fries and it’s an any-night-of-the-week dinner out. While it’s not perfect, it’s beautiful, versatile, service is fantastic, and there’s no arguing that it’s a welcome addition to the neighborhood.


4 New and Renovated Hotels in New York to Consider for Future Events

Located in Midtown Manhattan East, Westgate New York Grand Central is a 23-story brick building that was originally constructed in 1931 as the Hotel Tudor and known for years as the Hilton Midtown Hotel. Now, nine decades later, the historic hotel has been re-imagined as Westgate New York Grand Central, a recently renovated, luxury hotel with the ambience and charm of a bygone era.

Westgate New York offers 3,500 square feet of flexible, partitioned meeting space that includes two fully equipped executive board rooms, the largest of which is 1,550 square feet and accommodates up to 161 people. The second-floor boardroom features triple-paned windows that allow abundant natural sunlight to help keep attendees focused and refreshed and a fixed mahogany conference table that comfortably accommodates up to 14 people.

Featuring private balconies overlooking the city, the property’s rooms are larger than the typical New York hotel with all rooms at least 226 square feet, serving as a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle below.

In addition to the property’s convenient meeting space, Westgate New York is within steps of Grand Central Station and the United Nations, along with Broadway shows, fine dining and NYC city tours.

New to New York is Pestana Park Avenue, Pestana Hotel Group’s first location in the state and 100th property worldwide. The hotel was designed by award-winning Manhattan-based architectural firm Glen & Company and was intended to evoke a sense of staying in a Portuguese home. Pestana Park Avenue features various Portuguese details throughout the hotel, including photography, a decorative outdoor tile panel, murals by famed artists, in-room amenities and more.

Consisting of 27 floors and 95 rooms, Pestana Park Avenue lets guests select from several room types including a Cozy Room, Classic Room, Superior Room, Balcony Room and Junior Suite, to fit their needs. Each floor only has three or four rooms for the ultimate privacy and each guestroom features elements that have dual function including a full-length rotating mirror with hangers and digital television frames that also serve as an electronic display for Pestana’s custom photographs and artwork.

Pestana Park Avenue has partnered with Convene at 101 Park Avenue which is just around the block from the hotel for any meeting needs. Convene offers over 20,000 square feet of meetings and event space, including a reception lounge that can accommodate up to 200 people.

Also in Manhattan is the new Courtyard New York Midtown West, a 399-room hotel that includes a variety of group offerings catering to small or large meetings. Located across the street from Hudson Yards and two blocks from the Jacob Javits Convention Center, the property features elevated guestrooms and suites, custom meeting and event space and a convenient location for any sized meeting or event.

The Courtyard New York Midtown West offers up to 250 room blocks and custom packages and promotions for groups of all sizes. Williamsburg

The new Hotel Indigo Williamsburg Brooklyn, located among the industrial warehouses and bohemian boutiques of Williamsburg, features over 20,000 square feet of flexible event space, a full-service kosher kitchen and 127 guestrooms. Meeting and event planners can choose from the 6,600-square-foot Williamsburg Ballroom, Union Mezz Ballroom, pre-function spaces and a variety of open-air venues for any-sized event.

Hotel Indigo Williamsburg Brooklyn features contemporary architecture, modern interior design, a pool complete with an open-air sun deck and poolside bar and grill, along with works by local designers and artisans. The Brooklyn Bridge is easily accessible, connecting guests to Manhattan attractions.


Breckenridge Brewery (Breckenridge, CO)

In anticipation of the upcoming Breck Trek nights in Dallas this week, I stepped in to the actual Breckenridge Brewery for a pint and a tour. The state of the art brewery recently moved to a brand new facility in the Littleton neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. The beautiful mix of industrial metal and rustic wood creates the perfect atmosphere for beer connoisseurs and curious minds alike to enjoy an afternoon learning about the beer making process. I may not know much about beer, but the smell of the brewery alone was enough to make me want to start home brewing.

I started the tour with a nice glass of the Bumps N’ Jumps Session IPA, which is an exclusive and limited collaboration between Breckenridge and Vail (two awesome CO ski resorts). It accompanied the tour beautifully with light bitterness and full hop flavor. We then learned about the German-engineered tanks that are used in the facility the process and some of the things that make Breckenridge Brewery unique. My favorite tidbit was the fact that all of the spent grain (grain that the brewery no longer needs, which has been separated from the sugary liquid that will eventually be turned into beer) goes directly to a local farmer to feed his cattle. Efficiency, people.

The best stop on the tour was the barrel room, where all of the barrel-aged beer is stored for a period of time to absorb the taste and smells of the barrels themselves (much like aging a spirit). This room smelled like HEAVEN. The aromas of wood and rum and vanilla all played so well together that I refused to leave. They have several beers on rotation through the barrel room, but one beer that they always have available is their Whiskey Barrel Aged 471 Double IPA with Citra hops, which gives off aromas of tropical fruits and citrus flavors.

You may think that a brewery tour is all there is to do at the Breckenridge Brewery … EHHH! After the tour, I got to indulge myself in lunch at the Farm House, their on-site restaurant. Rustic rocking chairs, plush and comfy seating, and a stone fireplace provide for a mountain-esque ambiance. We started our meal with—what else—a flight of beer. Up for review was the Nitro Orange Chocolate Stout, the Break IPA, the Ophelia Hoppy Wheat, and the Whiskey Barrel Aged 471 Dry Hopped with Citra IPA. All were delicious and has citrus-y flavors, but my favorite was the Ophelia for its lightness and Mosaic hops.

Up to the challenge of satisfying my hunger were several plates, which we shared as to try the most items. We chose the chicken pot pie, the venison chili mac and cheese, and the salmon with risotto and asparagus. I don’t know which I enjoyed more because I didn’t stop to breathe between bites … everything was that good. As for desert, and my stomach said “no” but my eyes and my head said “OH YEAH, BABY. You have months before bathing suit season.” Guess which won? We indulged anyway and ordered the Apple Galette, a warm apple pie/strudel served in a cast iron skillet and topped with house-made vanilla porter ice cream.

This experience was the perfect lead in to the Breck Trek tour, which will be traveling across the US to give the other states a taste of the Colorado lifestyle. Live music, beer education, and of course Breckenridge Brewery beer sampling will occur at every stop on the tour. Last week I asked for y’all to help Ryan and me plan our weekend getaway to NYC- I am so appreciative of all the recommendations and suggestions we received! We wish we had more than 1 night so we could do, see, and dine at all of them!

I thought it would be fun do a Five Things Friday edition focused around our plans for the weekend…

1. Travel. After much debate and weighing the pros and cons of both plane and train, we decided to take the train! When I was younger and my family went to NYC we always went via train- it’s almost equal in time as taking a plane [considering the security lines, check-in, and baggage claim], it’s fun to see the passing scenery, and the seats are more spacious. This will be Ryan’s first time riding a train so he’s excited!

2. Accommodations. Having only been to NYC a few times, I had no idea where to stay. Closer to Central Park to escape all the city life? Directly in Times Square near all the hustle and bustle? Save a few bucks and stay somewhere on the outskirts? Or splurge a little more since it’s only for 1 night? I looked into a few recommendations but unfortunately they were either booked or only had their ooober expensive rooms still available [understandable since it’s Valentine’s Day weekend]. Ryan and I both thought it would be more fun to stay closer to Midtown and near all the sites and restaurants so we decided to stay at the Hilton New York.

3. Dining. Ryan said he wanted to treat me to a fancier than usual dinner on Saturday night. We were indifferent about what type of cuisine we wanted so we opted to ask our friends for recommendations. We considered an Italian restaurant in the Theater District [a romantic atmosphere and a traditional Italian menu], a southwestern restaurant in the Flatiron District [a fun atmosphere and an intriguing menu], and a steakhouse in Midtown [a traditional dark wood atmosphere and meat-focused menu]… We ultimately made reservations at Ben & Jack’s Steakhouse .

4. Attractions. Since we’ll only have one day in the city [arriving at 9AM on Saturday and leaving at 11AM Sunday], I didn’t want to commit to too many things and think that it’ll be more fun for us to do whatever sounds appealing in the moment. The few set-in-stone plans we do have include:

-A walk throughout Central Park

-Meet up with one of my girlfriends from home Heather [she has written a couple of guest posts!] to take our engagement pictures!

5. Charlie. My attempts to convince Ryan to bring Charlie with us were unsuccessful. I agree that it will be more relaxing [and romantic] just the two of us but I’m nervous to leave my baby boy in the care of someone else. Earlier in the week we checked out the PetSmart PetsHotel and were impressed. The facilities were clean, the other dogs looked happy, the staff was accommodating and friendly, and the overall experience sounds like a vacation… We made Charlie a reservation to stay there for two nights, as well as a grooming session, and will plan to pick him up when we get home on Sunday.

Daily Memorable Moments

February 9: Attending a county-wide meeting and receiving an email from my department chair that the substitute teacher assigned to cover my class did not show up. My mind began to race and my heart sunk.

February 10: Dropping Charlie off at the PetsHotel. I am predicting that I am going to be one of “those” [overprotective] momma’s when I have children…


New york city trip report – part #1: top 6 dishes of the week

New York City, with every kind of restaurant imaginable, is a food lover’s paradise. It is one of my favorite cities and I’ve had the good fortune to have visited there four times in the past year and a half, including a trip last week. I always go armed with a long list of restaurants to try, culled from various sources such as Cooking Channel’s Unique Eats and Food Network’s The Best Thing I Ever Ate as well as websites such as Serious Eats and Eater NY. For this trip, my list included some new-to-me spots like The Mile End Deli in Brooklyn, The Breslin Bar and Dining Room, Sweet Revenge, and any one of Eataly‘s eateries, as well as old standbys Ippudo NY and Shake Shack. I made it to all of the restaurants on my list, discovering many wonderful new dishes and enjoying some old favorites. Although it was hard to narrow it down, I wanted to share with you the top 6 dishes I enjoyed this week. Why 6? Well, because I just couldn’t get the list down to 5. So here they are, in reverse order:

#6 – Foie Gras Tartine with Fig Jam at The Tartinery NYC

Tartinery in NoLIta is a chic and elegant take on the French bistro concept and the perfect respite to the hustle and bustle of Mulberry Street. As its name implies, the restaurant specializes in tartines – French open-faced sandwiches. The two-story space houses a café and bar upstairs and a spacious dining room downstairs that is anchored by a giant ficus tree in the center. The interior is gorgeous, with beautiful exposed brick covered with a metal grid, high ceilings and big windows to let in the light. The seasonal menu is simple , healthy, and authentic. The restaurant imports their bread from well-knowned French bakery, Poîlane, as the base for their tartines. Of the 15 or so varieties, I opted for the luscious duck foie gras. Sprinkled with sea salt and served with fig jam, this tartine is the perfect combination of salty and sweet. The fig jam perfectly cut the richness of the generous amount of silky smooth and indulgent foie gras.

#5 – Akamaru Modern Ramen at Ippudo NY

Located in the East Village, Ippudo NY, is a modern Japanese ramen noodle brasserie. It is a dark, loud and raucous place that serves the best ramen I’ve ever had, the Akamaru Modern. Ippudo quickly became one of our first stops when we arrive in the city, and, in my mind, this signature red bowl, containing some hot, deeply satisfying noodles and broth has become synonymous with New York City. It is made with a rich tonkatsu (pork) broth and topped with a red miso paste, pork chasu, cabbage, kikurage mushrooms, scallions, and drizzled with a dark and flavorful garlic oil. The nitamago, or soft-boiled egg, is silky smooth with a runny yolk and is the perfect topping in this ramen. Warning: Finishing a bowl of Akamaru Modern will definitely put you in what we lovingly call a “ramen stupor.”

#4 – Pulled Duroc Pork Sandwich with Spicy Honey at NumPang Sandwich Shop

Num Pang is the Cambodian word for “sandwich” and the name of this tiny two-story shop near Union Square (there is another location Midtown, as well). Similar to the Vietnamese banh mi, all the gourmet sandwiches here are served on crusty bread and with thinly-sliced cucumbers, shredded pickled carrots, cilantro and housemade chili mayo. Num Pang uses high-quality ingredients like the fresh baked semolina flour baguettes from New York institution, Parisi Bakery, and well-marbled premium Duroc pork, known as the “black angus” of pork. This pulled pork sandwich is the perfect balance of crisp pickled vegetables and slightly sweet, moist pulled pork. The drizzle of honey accentuates the deep pork flavor and the somewhat spicy mayo gives the sandwich some zing.

#3 – Tongue Sandwich with Borscht at The Breslin Bar and Dining Room

The Breslin Bar and Dining Room is a gastropub with dark wooden walls, cracked ceilings, and butcher paper-lined tables located in the Ace Hotel. The chef, Englishwoman April Bloomfield, first introduced nose-to-tail pub food to New York City at her original restaurant, the Spotted Pig and continues it here at The Breslin. We came here for the Lamb Burger with Thrice-Cooked Fries, which was absolutely juicy and delicious, but it was the Tongue Sandwich with a bowl of Borscht that stole the show! I know organ meats are not everyone’s cup of tea, but tongue is quite a tasty part of the cow. (Growing up, one of my favorite dishes was my Mom’s version of braised beef tongue so I do have a lot of experience eating it.) This sandwich is taken off the menu during the summer months but reappeared the day before our visit. Lucky for us!! The tongue is braised until completely tender and then it is garnished with horseradish for a little kick! Bloomfield then takes the intense and flavorful braising liquid and uses it to make the Borscht.

#2 – Hirata Pork Bun at Ippudo NY

As a prelude to the rich Akamaru Modern (#5) ramen, this steamed pork bun at Ippudo is insanely good. The bun is thick, yet soft, light, and fluffly, and filled with a thick slab of tender and buttery pork belly slathered in an Asian barbecue sauce of sorts, a tangy and spicy “special sauce” and Japanese mayo. It is such a simple and satisfying dish. My mouth is watering as I type this description, longing for one more bite.

#1 – Peanut Butter Cupcake at Sweet Revenge®

In a city overrun by the cupcake craze started by Magnolia Bakery’s appearance in Sex and the City, Sweet Revenge® cleverly raises the bar by pairing them with beer and wine. Housed in a tiny storefront on Carmine Street in the West Village, Sweet Revenge® is the brainchild of Marlo Scott, who vowed to take her “sweet revenge” after being laid off as a director at a media company. Luckily for us, she capitalized on her misfortune and turned her attentions to making these beautiful, edgy, grown-up cupcakes with their signature icing reminiscent of a mohawk. This is not the place for cutesy little cupcakes in pastel-colored liners. These cupcakes are baked in individual sheets of parchment paper placed in the tins so that they resemble tulips. The menu features four signature cupcakes that are always available and two more that rotate from a list of artisan flavors. The menu also suggests both a wine and beer pairing for each cupcake. The namesake, Sweet Revenge, is a peanut butter cupcake filled with a dark chocolate ganache and a peanut butter fudge frosting. You might think it is a bit of peanut butter overload, but, trust me, it was not cloying or overly sweet! The cupcake was moist and had a great texture. Stretching across a swath of Midtown Manhattan—north-south from 59th to 34th and east-west from 8th Avenue to the Hudson—Clinton has the personality to match its square mileage. Classically known by the evocative name Hell’s Kitchen, the neighborhood has come a long way from the days when waterfront industries dominated. Though it is in a bit of a public transit desert, Clinton is near hubs like Times Square, Port Authority, and Columbus Circle. What it may lack in subways, however, is more than made for by charm. Due to zoning regulations set in the 1970s, most of the area—at least north of 42nd street—has been excluded from luxury development. As a result, Clinton can be characterized by its low-rise, six-story apartment buildings, which retain their original character. Though little more than concrete separates them, Clinton offers a respite from the constant hustle of Midtown West and the in-your-face neon glow of Times Square.
